Jazz Objectives and Standards

The following information provides both aims/objectives of SCBDA-sponsored jazz events and the National and State standards met through participation.


The following National Standards for Music (Ensemble) are addressed in the execution of these SCBDA sponsored events:

MU:Cr1.1.E Generate musical ideas for various purposes and contexts.
MU:Cr3.2.E Share creative musical works that convey intent, demonstrate craftsmanship, and exhibit originality.
MU:Pr4.1.E Select varied musical works to present based on interest, knowledge, technical skill, and context.
MU:Pr4.2.E Analyze the structure and context of varied musical works and their implications for performance.
MU:Pr4.3.E Develop personal interpretations that consider creators’ intent.
MU:Pr5.3.E Evaluate and refine personal and ensemble performances, individually or in collaboration with others.
MU:Pr6.1.E Perform expressively, with appropriate interpretation and technical accuracy, and in a manner appropriate to the audience and context.

The following South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards for Instrumental Music are addressed in the execution of these SCBDA sponsored events:

Anchor Standard 2: I can improvise music.

Anchor Standard 3: I can produce a characteristic tone.

Anchor Standard 4: I can perform with technical accuracy and expression.

Anchor Standard 5: I can perform using musical notation.

Anchor Standard 8: I can relate musical ideas to personal experiences, culture, and history.

Anchor Standard 9: I can relate music to other arts disciplines, other content areas, and career path choices.

Aims and Objectives

 
  1. To Stimulate and promote statewide interest in the highest quality of musicianship in jazz performance.

  2. To provide directors and students an opportunity to participate in jazz performances and hear and interact with other directors and students in the state.

  3. To provide directors an students an opportunity to receive constructive criticism from qualified adjudicators.

  4. To provide information regarding jazz performance to directors an students.

  5. To recognize outstanding achievements among band students in South Carolina.
