Call for Research Submissions

South Carolina Music Educators Association
State Conference Poster Session
Columbia, South Carolina
February 8–10, 2024
Deadline for Submissions – Monday, December 18, 2023

The South Carolina Music Educators Association will sponsor a research poster session on Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 10:30 AM–12:00 PM during the SCMEA State In-service Conference on February 8–10, 2024. The conference is held at the Columbia Conference Center, Columbia, SC. We accept submissions of completed and in-progress studies conducted by undergraduate and graduate students, college and university faculty, and practicing teachers in public or private schools. This poster session is open to papers involving any aspect of scholarly research in music, including those that are philosophical, theoretical, or historical in nature, as well as reports that are qualitative or quantitative in design.

Proposals will be read by two or more qualified external reviewers who will be blind to the applicant’s identity. As such, the accepted papers will have passed a refereed criterion. Notification of acceptance will occur by December 31st. Reviewers’ feedback to applicants will be provided.

To create more opportunities for graduate students to present research, the two graduate students with the highest combined score from the external reviewers will have the opportunity to give a spoken presentation at the conference. These spoken research presentation sessions will be held on Saturday, February 10, prior to the poster session.  Winners will be awarded a 20-minute time slot for their spoken presentation on the SCMEA schedule. Please know we do not provide honoraria or expense reimbursement for those accepted to give research presentations. University faculty are not eligible for this presentation time.

Proposals should be in the form of a one-page abstract and should summarize in prose the following elements that apply to your study: (a) purpose/problem; (b) sample/inclusion criteria; (c) methods (d) results/ analysis; and (e) discussion/implications. A reference list is optional and can be submitted separately. ALL paradigms, methodologies, and approaches to research in our field are welcome and encouraged. Reports of research-in-progress are also welcome.

Proposals should be submitted online via this link. The deadline for proposals is Monday, December 18, 2023. Proposals submitted after this time may be considered if openings exist, however, it may not be possible to advertise them in the conference program.

To present accepted proposals at the SCMEA research poster sessions, authors must register for the SCMEA Professional Development Conference. Information regarding conference registration dates and fees will be communicated to authors per the letter of acceptance.
