Marching Objectives & Standards

The following information provides both aims/objectives of SCBDA-sponsored marching band events and the National and State standards met through participation.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 

  1. To stimulate interest in the highest quality of musicianship in marching band.

  2. To provide directors and students an opportunity to hear and see bands other than their own.

  3. To promote statewide interests in bands and band activities.

  4. To enable bands to receive constructive criticism from qualified adjudicators.

  5. To select the official SCBDA Upper State, Lower State, and State Champions in each of the 5 school classifications.

  6. To provide the most prestigious recognition possible for outstanding achievement in the marching band idiom.

Standards

The following National Standards for Music (Ensemble) are addressed in the execution of this SCBDA sponsored event.

MU:Pr4.2.E Analyzing creators’ context and how they manipulate elements of music provides insight into their intent.
Mu:Pr5.3.E Evaluate and refine personal and ensemble performances, individually or in collaboration with others.
MU:Pr6.1.E Perform expressively, with appropriate interpretation and technical accuracy, and in a manner appropriate to the audience and context.
MU:Re8.1.E Through their use of elements and structures of music, creators and performers provide clues to their expressive intent.
MU:Cn10.0.H Musicians connect their personal interest, experiences, ideas, and knowledge to creating, performing, and responding.
MU:Cn11.o.T Understanding connections to varied contexts and daily life enhances musicians’ creating, performing, and responding.

The following South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards for Instrumental Music are addressed in the execution of this SCBDA sponsored event:

Anchor Standard 3 I can produce a characteristic tone.
Anchor Standard 4 I can perform with technical accuracy and expression.
Anchor Standard 7 I can evaluate music.
Anchor Standard 8 I can relate musical ideas to personal experiences, culture, and history.
